Zoo Keeper
The best job I ever had was as a zoo keeper at a facility with a domestic farm petting zoo along with a wildlife collection. My duties included feeding, watering, cleaning, diet preparation, habitat repairs, and miscellaneous projects. The animals need their keepers 24-7 so this job goes on in all weather, everyday. It is demanding work physically, but more enjoyable than going to the gym. Camaraderie with other animal loving colleagues is a plus, and visitors are enjoying themselves, often with their children. The best part of the job is the animals: it is hard to explain, but it is an honor to be in their presence and provide for them. There are many comic moments since animals often out-smart humans. From time to time an animal dies, but knowing they have been content and well cared for makes up for these sorrows. And there are births – there is nothing quite likes awkward baby goats or piglets eager for their mother’s milk. One caution: It is tempting to think ponies, sheep, calves, chickens, wolves and bears have come to love you. No, it’s actually about their food! Nevertheless, this was happy, wholesome work and I do miss it.
