Choosing a New Best Friend

February 8th, 2010 admin Comments off

Having a dog for a pet can bring a lot of joy to you, and your family. Choosing the right one for you can be a task, but there are many sources where you can learn the different traits for each breed. Certain studies suggest that spending time with a beloved pet can also reduce stress, therefore, making you healthier. After you decide which breed to adopt, you will need to pick up a few essentials such as proper feeding bowls, a leash, and a dog collar. A dog collar is important so that when you are walking your dog, it can’t run loose and hurt itself or another person. You can find these items at your local pet store. Proper training is also important. You can buy tools and books to teach you how to properly train your dog or you can hire a professional trainer. It may be a lot of hard work, but owning a pet can be one of the greatest enjoyments in life.

Friends for Awhile

January 24th, 2010 admin Comments off

Dogs and humans have been best friends for long. Dogs give unconditional love, loyalty and friendship to their owners. Bathing your dog at regular intervals is necessary. However, giving it a bath on an exceedingly frequent basis can dry out its skin and coat and result in skin infections. The best bet would be to bathe your dog once in a month. In case it gets too dirty in-between, rub it with a damp towel or wash just the paws.  Remember, a nutritionally balanced diet, with constant access to fresh water, is as good for your dog as it is for you. Also, beds that aid in comfort for a dog’s digestive system are large orthopedic dog beds. Before deciding on the proper diet for your dog, it is advisable to consult a veterinary doctor.

Choosing the right collar for your dog

January 12th, 2010 admin Comments off

Most of the dog owners make a mistake while purchasing a collar for their dog. Choosing a right type of collar for a particular dog is very necessary. If the collar is not comfortable for the dog then they will continuously growl and will make a problem while it is taken for a walk. The neck is very vital part for a dog. So, the collar must be very much comfortable for them. It should not pinch or choke the neck; otherwise it can create breathing problems for your pet dog. A regular nylon dog collar and leash are quite good for a dog. The length and the width of the collar should be selected properly. Adjust the collar so that it neither fits too loose nor too tight.

We use to spend 2 hours in a park near by my house. After walking we will go to beach and relax there for 1 hour. I use to feed my dog daily 4 times. A Beagle’s favorite game

November 28th, 2009 admin Comments off

We have had our Beagle, Hoshi for about two years now and she has never been a dog that liked playing in the traditional sense.  She does not fetch or play tug-of-war.  What she does like to do, however, is tricks.  It is as exciting for her as fetch is for a Labrador.  She loves to sit pretty, roll over, crawl, and play dead just to name a few.  She learns at least one new trick every few weeks.  She will do anything for a treat.  Like many dogs, her whole life revolves around how to find and get food.  She learns tricks very quickly because she knows that a correct response will result in a bit a food.  She would do tricks all day if we let her.  Unfortunately, treats would cause weight gain which would result in trouble doing many of her tricks so we cannot let her playas long as she would like.  Dog cologne is something she likes too, so she smells good. Last summer I had a visit from a relative who noted that my dog Poika, a collie, has a matted coat.  Since this relative is a courteous person, and the words most likely just slipped out of her mouth, I realized that the condition of my dog’s coat must be pretty bad.   I had thought about combing or brushing him but he wiggles around and doesn’t like the process, so I just  let it go.  Now, I am in the process of using scissors on him.  I can’t cut too much because winter is coming on and he loves the outdoors.  I cut a few mats each day, and soon I will go over him with a brush and comb.  Any snarled up hair that I miss will be shed anyway.

Choose your toys carefully

November 27th, 2009 admin Comments off

When deciding on purchasing toys for your pet make certain to select your toys with care.  Personally I made the mistake of introducing stuffed animals to my pets.  This leads to piles of puffy stuffing all over the house which seemed like the worst problem but really wasn’t.  Then the dogs graduated to eating my comforter, slippers and any pillow or cushiony item they could locate.  They all resemble the stuffed toys they are permitted to play with so there is confusing on this issue.  There is always the issue of the eyes, ribbons, tags and other objects which can be chewed off of the stuffed toys and lodged in your pet’s throat or intestinal tract.  If they chew on dog coats too, it can cause problems. Although, I still buy my dogs stuffed toys, since it is too late for my sanity, I still find it necessary to warn others there is more to this simple fun that you can imagine!

Orlando Animal Shelter

November 26th, 2009 admin Comments off

I recently adopted a 3 month old lab/pit bull mix from the Orlando Animal Shelter.  Unfortunately and unfairly pits have a bad reputation for being aggressive but she is the sweetest, friendliest dog I have ever had.  I think she is the perfect mix because not only is she good with everyone she is also protective.  Since I have never had such a young dog before it is an amazing experience because I’m able to see her grow physically and emotionally.  I love being able to see her learn new things like learning how to fetch, sit and stay and wear cute dog sweaters.  The hardest thing to do is probably bathing her.  Her breed is prone to skin disease and infection so I have to be very consistent and through when washing her.  I think the funniest thing I’ve learned about her is that she’ll fight a bath but she absolutely loves the shower.

Doggy Couture

November 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Everyone who owns a loyal four legged friend knows that doggy fashions is a growing trend. It doesn’t matter if you own a Chihuahua or a Labrador Retriever there is stylish clothing for them all. Now of course we all think of Bruiser from Legally Blonde when we hear the words xs dog clothes and of course we should, after all he is the most stylish dog of them all is he not? Only let it be known that we don’t all have to have a Bruiser, we could have any type of dog and have them be just as stylish. For example, I myself have a lab/husky mix and a rambunctious Paderdayle terrier who love dressing in gorgeous sweaters, shirts and yes even doggles! How cute is that, you can even protect your beloved pups eyes while walking in the rain or snow with goggles designed specifically for them. Not to mention that their little tootsies can be nice and toasty with the oh so cute booties that are available in all sizes and colors. Now of course I know what everyone is thinking, it seems like a lot to buy for a pup doesn’t it?  We can always be in fashion and also be a saver as well; you don’t have to pay name brand prices for your name brands. So for all you dog lovers out there keep up the fashion trends and keep loving your babies! They will give you the most love and loyalty that you have ever known and make you smile whenever you are sad. Who could resist a smile while looking at a gorgeous pup wearing goggles and a gorgeous winter coat, no one can I am sure of it!

Keeping a happy pet inside the house

November 11th, 2009 admin Comments off

I have always wanted to have a pet and in particular I always wanted a dog.  When we finally bought a house and could keep any pet we wanted without anyone else’s approval, I went out looking for a dog.  My partner used to say if you want a dog, get a decent dog, not something that I can trip over.  So I went and got a Great Dane!   We have a beautiful dog now.  He is gentle and huge so incongruous.  As both of us work full time we need to make sure that the house is looked after while our ‘baby’ has a reasonable means of moving around.  We looked at dog gates to ensure that some space is protected and some is accessible.  There is quite a choice on the market.  With a dog as large as ours, it does not matter how strong the dog gate is, he respects an obstacle in the way and stays away.  We have a gate now that gives him free run of the living area and keeps him away from the kitchen and the study.  It works wonderfully!
