A book I have been given which I always return to reread is an edition of the trilogy by Dave Pelzer (containing the stories A Child Called ‘It’, The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave). These books follow the harrowing early life of Dave in which he suffered mental and physical abuse by his Mother and charts his progress through the foster home system and eventually on to his life as an adult. Although, at times, it can be a hard read, this book continues to inspire me and provides hope that a person is not their past. I definitely recommend you have a read as I have given this book to numerous friends and they have felt similar to me. As someone who works with children from disadvantaged areas, this book will always underline, for me, the fact that a child always has a bright future if they can find people who will support and believe in them.

When to Consider an Orthopedic Dog Bed

February 27th, 2010 admin Comments off

Orthopedic dog beds should be considered for a variety of reasons.  If your dog is getting older and showing signs of stiffness or having trouble getting up, it is certainly the time to start looking at orthopedic dog beds.  Older dogs can have problems with arthritis and can develop hip dysplasia.  This causes pain and soreness, just like arthritis does with humans.  Everyone knows how lying down in a comfy bed helps these symptoms.  Also, the dog that is recovering from surgery is made more comfortable in an orthopedic bed.  Larger breed dogs are another category that really enjoys having a comfortable bed to support their larger bodies evenly.  Some orthopedic beds come in memory foam and some are even heated.  It is definitely worth checking into these beds to make your dog feel comfortable and content.

Okay Blue Jays!

February 24th, 2010 admin Comments off

My favorite baseball team is the Toronto Blue Jays. They play in the American League East, and started play in 1977. Originally, the team played at Exhibition Stadium. In 1985, the Toronto Blue Jays won their first American League East crown. After going up three games to one against the Kansas City Royals, they went on to lose three straight and lose the series (Royals went on to win the World Series that year). In 1989, the Blue Jays would move into their new (and current home) called the Rogers Center (originally called Skydome). It’s a 53,000 retractable roof domed stadium. In 1992, the Toronto Blue Jays won their first World Series title, defeating the Atlanta Braves. The next year, the Jays would also win the World Series, this time defeating the Philadelphia Phillies on a Joe Carter home run. Unfortunately, the Toronto Blue Jays haven’t been back to the post season since, but with their young and talented roster, the future looks very promising.

I Want Them to Be “My Boys”

PARK CITY, UT - JANUARY 21: (L-R) Actors Jim ...

I really enjoy the show “My Boys”. The premise is that a female sports reporter has a circle of friends that is mostly boys. She hangs out with them, plays poker with them, drinks beer with them, and other stereotypically boy activities. Not only do I like the characters (They’re well-written), I like the actors who play them. I have fun watching them, and I imagine I’d have fun hanging out with them. I also love the fact that I know absolutely nothing about sports, yet I can understand the show without a problem. Unique situations turn up from the gender difference between PJ (the main character) and the boys–especially when she starts dating one of them. A highlight of the show is comedian Jim Gaffigan as PJ’s brother. His dialogue is clever, and his delivery is usually spot-on. I like the show because it’s good old-fashioned fun.

My Bad Day

February 17th, 2010 admin Comments off

Then I had to get the house ready for a cook-out with the in-laws and family and deal with a cranky younger child. I had to go shopping for food for the party as well as things that were needed around the house and for school lunches. Guests started showing up around late afternoon and had to entertain and keep a cheery face so as to not show how upset I was about the fight I had had earlier with my dear husband. After the party, my husband found the receipt for the shopping trip and starting fighting with me over how much money I had spent and what it was on. (Which was mostly for food for his children?) So basically it started with crying and ended with crying. What a lovely day!!!

They call it T-town

February 12th, 2010 admin Comments off

I live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and it is called T-town. It is a University town because it is home to the University of Alabama. We also have a community or 2 year college called Shelton State and a private called Stillman College. Tuscaloosa was once the capital of Alabama. It is next to the Black Warrior River. The city is in the process of developing the river area with parks and recreation areas. The downtown area is also in the middle of a major redevelopment because a new federal courthouse is being built. Besides the University, the city has other major employers – Druid City Hospital is probably the largest employee. We also have JVC and Mercedes International. One thing that Tuscaloosa lacks is malls and major stores. We do not even have a Best Buy or Circuit City. One of the malls is about to close because the only major store closed last year. I would like to see a Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond and a Macy’s come to town. Tuscaloosa is probably best known for college football because of Coach Bear Bryant. People from all over the state name their children after Coach Bryant. My husband and I both work at the University. And that is a small bit about T-town.

An Instrument for Everyone

February 9th, 2010 admin Comments off

Think of your favorite songs…what do they all have in common? They can easily be played on the piano and sound like your favorite song. For this reason, the piano is the favorite musical instrument of many people, me included. When trying to play a song on an instrument like a flute or trumpet, you cannot hear what the entire song would sound like. You would need an entire band to fully appreciate what the song is supposed to be. On the other hand, a song on a piano can be clearly recognized and enjoyed with that instrument alone. The piano is one of the easiest instruments to learn how to play. If you can read music, you can learn how to play the piano. The keys are easy to learn with simple phrases taught to most all children when they are starting out with the piano. If the phrases are learned, a student will never forget where the keys are located on the piano. For these reasons, the piano is the best instrument.

Choosing a New Best Friend

February 8th, 2010 admin Comments off

Having a dog for a pet can bring a lot of joy to you, and your family. Choosing the right one for you can be a task, but there are many sources where you can learn the different traits for each breed. Certain studies suggest that spending time with a beloved pet can also reduce stress, therefore, making you healthier. After you decide which breed to adopt, you will need to pick up a few essentials such as proper feeding bowls, a leash, and a dog collar. A dog collar is important so that when you are walking your dog, it can’t run loose and hurt itself or another person. You can find these items at your local pet store. Proper training is also important. You can buy tools and books to teach you how to properly train your dog or you can hire a professional trainer. It may be a lot of hard work, but owning a pet can be one of the greatest enjoyments in life.

My week so far has been very busy

Family Hike

I worked five days this week, as I normally do in the summer. I am a cake decorator and I really enjoy my job, but I have to be up and out of the house early and that is the part that I dread. However, I was able to make time during the week to ride my horse a few times, so that makes me happy. The weekend brought a lot of rain where I live, so my outdoor plans of biking and hiking ended up being cancelled. Instead, I stayed inside and went shopping for a birthday present for my little brother. He is turning 14 nest weeks and I bought him a couple of movies for his birthday. Today was the last day of the week and it has gone well so far. I had a lovely dinner with my family and am headed back to school tomorrow.
