My Life Today

August 5th, 2009 admin Comments off

Hi…Just want to share with you all about the things that have happened today for me and the things that I have done today. Oh! Yesterday night my husband came late from the office, so we ate late and slept late. So, we got up late today morning. So we are in a hurry! We both went jogging (we jogged only for 20 minutes since we are late) just to keep ourselves fresh the day long. Then I prepared breakfast quickly (as name says it was fast) i don’t know whether it was tasty, but he ate without any comments, thank god. Then he went to office but I took off today since I had some personal things to do. If I didn’t do this time it may pile up some day and become big headache for me one day. So I decided to do it today. By god’s grace everything went smoothly. Then I returned home, it was 4 in the evening. I had my lunch outside, so I prepared some coffee since I was feeling tired. At half past 5, went to GYM, which is my usual routine. After some workouts I come home, relax and watch TV. Then I started preparing my dinner – salad, juice, roti and a side dish. Waiting for my husband to have dinner with him – still waiting. Hope he returns quickly unlike yesterday.

The Past Week and Our Struggle against the System

It has been kind of stressful in our household for the past week or so. We’ve not had any real money since last Wednesday, with the exception that my aunt gave us $20 to do laundry. We have managed to overdraw our account by more than $70 because we wrote checks for food when we didn’t have any money. In addition, 2 of those checks were returned which turned a debt of $15.00 into a debt of more than $65 after all of the fees. I’ve been working hard doing any tasks I can and sending the money into my bank account to try to pay down our debt. So far I’ve sent about $20 to our bank account. We had considered getting assistance, but every time we seek assistance they find a reason to deny us. I’ve been denied twice merely because I am a student. It is astonishing because everyone knows that students have no money. My significant other was denied because it hasn’t been enough years between when he last sought assistance.

Local Products for a Local Dinner

It is a wonderful thing to live in a rural area this time a year. The garden is in. Although we had a drought last year and into this spring, our garden is producing again. The main entree was Swiss steak. The meat cam from a local farm and was processed here in town. The animal was carefully fed and taken to market at just the right time, ensuring the marblezation was perfect. My wife is an excellent cook and spends most of the day preparing the tomatoes fresh from garden. We like an especially sweet, yellow onion that is produced locally. We haven’t figured out how they get them so sweet and flavorful. We do know they grow them from seed. The best of the vegetables are the green peppers. Wisconsin, I think, grows the best green peppers anywhere. The flesh is thick and meaty, with a taste that is so robust, that it is hard to describe. We throw in a few hot peppers for spice. The sweet corn has just ripened. We grow it good around here. It is very sweet with large kernels and long cobs. Instead of potatoes, we substituted organic, raw milk cheese that is made less than a mile away. It also serves as dessert. This cheese is pro-biotic and improves digestion and aids the immune system. Our dinner is not really healthy, but does not conation all the processed foods common today. When the season is over, it will be hard to go back to that canned food.

Our Family Reunion

Last weekend we decided to attend my husband’s family reunion. Originally we had no intention of going considering that the location was Rockford, IL and that is a two hour drive from our home. We have three children; one being a six week old infant, a two hour drive is never easy! While sitting here Saturday morning we made the decision to attend. What can I say, we were bored! So, our two hour journey began. Let me start with the fact that it took us two hours just pack up our stuff and actually get three young children into the car. My husband called my father in law for directions, which I was writing as he was explaining. This of course was already a disaster waiting to happen. My sense of direction is horrible and he knows this. So we are finally on the road and everything is going well until our exit on the highway is closed! We call for an alternate route and end up with two alternate routes. In the meantime, our children arguing in the backseat and our lack of concentration gets us completely lost.

My husband, who rarely gets aggravated, is officially frustrated. He decides he knows the way home so that is what we are going to do, go home! Go home? I couldn’t believe it, two and half hours and probably only an extra fifteen minutes to get to our destination and we are going home! I know the baby will never make another two hours home without a stop to eat but who am I to tell him. So, I of course, choose to say nothing! As we turn around and start heading home my father in law calls and we finally find our way there. As we arrive my husband is blaming the whole thing on me because the directions I wrote were not correct. All I’m thinking is get me out of the car. The kids instantly run off and enjoy the in ground pool on that 90 degree day while I find a nice shaded spot to sit with the baby. My husband is off somewhere playing bean bags and drinking beer, as I try to feed the baby and keep my eyes on two children swimming. After only two hours my husband decides it’s time to leave.

So again, I’m trying to gather all our things and get the kids changed into dry clothes while he sits and mingles! Even though it wasn’t very fulfilling for me, my children had a wonderful time and that makes me happy. The drive home was a lot shorter and peaceful. The kids and my husband slept while I drove, making for some much needed time alone with my thoughts. I expected a much more fun filled day but it had turned into an all day driving journey in my opinion. Needless to say, I don’t think I will be attending the next reunion. It didn’t really feel like a reunion at all, I could have taken the kids to the water park and had more fun!!

Zoo Keeper

August 1st, 2009 admin Comments off

The best job I ever had was as a zoo keeper at a facility with a domestic farm petting zoo along with a wildlife collection. My duties included feeding, watering, cleaning, diet preparation, habitat repairs, and miscellaneous projects. The animals need their keepers 24-7 so this job goes on in all weather, everyday. It is demanding work physically, but more enjoyable than going to the gym. Camaraderie with other animal loving colleagues is a plus, and visitors are enjoying themselves, often with their children. The best part of the job is the animals: it is hard to explain, but it is an honor to be in their presence and provide for them. There are many comic moments since animals often out-smart humans. From time to time an animal dies, but knowing they have been content and well cared for makes up for these sorrows. And there are births – there is nothing quite likes awkward baby goats or piglets eager for their mother’s milk. One caution: It is tempting to think ponies, sheep, calves, chickens, wolves and bears have come to love you. No, it’s actually about their food! Nevertheless, this was happy, wholesome work and I do miss it.
